ATG13 is a crucial component of the ULK complex which is indispensable for autophagy initiation. It forms complex with RB1CC1-ATG13-ATG101 and localizes on the autophagosomal membrane. In the inactive form, ATG13, along with ULK1, gets phosphorylated by mTORC kinase. On the other hand, Starvation or rapamycin treatment leads to dephosphorylation and activation of ULK1 complex (PMID: 19211835).
