Beclin1 is a subunit of the PI3KC3 complex which is crucial for the induction of autophagy. The activation or inhibition of beclin1 is regulated by the phosphorylation at specific sites. Beclin1 has three domains namely BH3-only domain that binds to Bcl2 inhibiting the recruitment of PIK3C3 complex (PMID: 9765397, 16179260), a central coiled-coil domain that binds to UVRAG (an activation factor of Beclin) and PI3KC3 (PMID: 18843052) and an evolutionarily conserved domain also interacting with PI3KC3 (PMID: 16874027).
