GABARAPL1, functioning as a ubiquitin-like modifier, plays a pivotal role in the autophagy pathway. The GABARAP subfamily is crucial for later stages of autophagosome maturation (PMID: 20418806). GABARAPL1 is associated with autophagic vesicles and contributes to maintaining normal autophagic flux, while also influencing cellular bioenergetics and metabolism (PMID: 20404487, 24879149). GABARAPL1 interacts with the ULK complex, facilitating its recruitment to the autophagosome initiation site (PMID: 31208283). GABARAPL1 exhibits a closer resemblance to yeast ATG8 compared to proteins in the LC3 subfamily.
