General Information

GABARAP, a ubiquitin-like modifier, is a key player in the autophagy process. Specifically, the GABARAP subfamily plays a pivotal role in the later stages of autophagosome maturation (PMID: 20418806). By conjugating with phosphatidylethanolamine lipid, GABARAP becomes associated with the autophagosome membrane. GABARAP's significance in autophagy is highlighted by its interaction with the ULK complex, where it serves as a scaffold for the assembly of the initiation complex (PMID: 23043107). Additionally, Golgi-associated Rab GTPases, which are involved in intracellular vesicle trafficking, have been implicated in autophagy, suggesting a potential link between GABARAP and these GTPases. GABARAP shares higher similarity with yeast ATG8 as compared to the LC3 subfamily protein.
