General Information

LC3C is the third and most evolved isoform of the LC3 family in human cells. It undergoes posttranslational modification to generate the LC3C-II forms. Like LC3A and LC3B, LC3C also contains a ubiquitin-like fold however it has a longer N-terminal with an addition of six amino acids. LC3C is particularly important for antibacterial autophagy, as it selectively binds to NDP52, which is crucial for protecting the cytoplasm against Salmonella (PMID: 23022382). LC3C also gets activated upon starvation-induced autophagy where it localizes from the nucleus to the cytoplasm (PMID: 27418283, 25945743).
