ULK1 is a serine/threonine kinase and a crucial component of ULK1 complex comprising ULK1, ATG13, ATG101 and RB1CC1 proteins. In inactive state, it binds with mTORC1 and gets phosphorylated along with ATG13. During starvation or rapamycin treatment, ULK1 gets dephosphorylated and functions as an active kinase for the downstream autophagy effector proteins thereby initiating autophagy. (PMID: 19211835)
