General Information

WIPI2 is a critical protein involved in the early events of autophagosome formation. It belongs to PROPPIN protein family that has a characteristic beta-propeller fold. This fold helps the protein recognise specific types of signalling lipids called phosphatidylinositol-3 phosphate. Upon binding to the membrane, WIPI2 can recruit ATG12-ATG5-ATG16L1 complex thereby leading to LC3 conjugation (PMID: 24954904).
