General Information

WIPI3 is a PROPPIN family protein found to be essential in alternative autophagy. Though its role in canonical autophagy is less known, in ATG5/ATG7-independent type of autophagy, it binds to golgi membranes and is required for the generation of isolation membrane. Some recent studies have suggested that loss of WIPI3 leads to behavioral defects as a result of cerebellar neuronal loss (PMID: 33082312).
